Chapter Nine

Dara couldn’t remember ever having a meal in bed—not even breakfast—but she’d been so reluctant to pull herself away from some silly old movie on cable she’d never managed to catch. Stacia had brought it all up.

Stacia had called ahead for takeout order. A bit of this and that from a barbecue place with plenty of leftovers, because apparently Stacia never cooked when she was on deadline. Dara couldn’t complain. She and Adrien had fallen into similar dietary habits as of late. She’d assume that their schedule would sort itself out eventually. Maybe they’d even start to eat vegetables again.

Stacia gathered up the food containers from the bedsides at a commercial break, making Dara finally pull her attention away from the screen. “Oh. Let me help.”

“Nope. I’m good. Just stay there. I’ll be right back.”

They’d been done eating for an hour, at least. Plenty of time to digest everything and to still want to nap it all off, and Dara had gotten very comfortable on Stacia’s bed. She had mounds of pillows and a California king.

Dara marveled at the fact that she slept in that bed all by herself.

That seemed kind of sad.

She caught the flash of a notification on her phone. She picked it up and read the message from Adrien.

dunno about buttercup now. need to think about this.

*pout*

aw. lol. going to a meeting with agent. be back late, LA time. telling you now g’nite. love you.

Dara’s fingers hesitated in responding. She wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was doing only what they’d agreed they could both do. There’d been no restrictions. It was all just so new, and deep down, she wasn’t sure she wanted that feeling to wear off. She never wanted to feel like carefulness didn’t matter. Her marriage would always come first, but erasing some of the question marks hanging over her head was an urgent priority. Sexuality evidently wasn’t a clear-cut thing, and to express hers, she’d need attention Adrien couldn’t give her. They were undoubtedly in the same boat but each trying to paddle in a different direction.

I love you, too, Adrien. So much. Good luck with your meeting.

thx for helping me w my hair should I cut it?

“Dear God, no,” she muttered aloud.

“No what?” Stacia asked, returning.

Dara cringed. “Oh. Adrien asked if he should cut his hair. He’s concerned about getting acting jobs, I guess.”

Stacia put a hand over her heart. “But then he’d look like every other buff white guy with brown hair in Hollywood, unless he grew a goatee or something.” She shuddered. “Don’t let him ever.”

“He tried to grow a beard once. It didn’t last. I guess I...complained.”

Adrien had been so stunned because she hadn’t said anything before that. It just hadn’t suited him. A bit of shadow was all right, but she didn’t see the good of him covering up a perfectly good face with all that coarse hair.

“Your complaints must be very powerful,” Stacia said with a laugh. She picked up Dara’s bottle of water from the floor and set it on the nightstand.
